The Whovian Grapghan

Who loves Who? I do! I do!

To celebrate the newest season of Doctor Who, I will be hosting a Whovian-themed crochet along (CAL) right here on the Two Hearts Crochet blog!

This CAL is made up of nine different squares worked in the C2C method featuring several beloved characters from the show! Each square works up to be 30 “blocks” by 30 “blocks”, or roughly 22″x22″, depending on your hook size, tension, etc.

If you want to learn the C2C method or just want to brush up on your skills, take a look at my C2C Basics video tutorials!

If you love Who as much as I do, then you’ll love this CAL! You can view the graphs for each of the squares as they become available by clicking on the appropriate link below. Each PDF contains two versions of the graph AND written instructions (in case you’re not a graph person).

Update as of 8/13/2018: a 13th Doctor square is now available for this collection! You can find Jodi’s Doctor as part of the Doctor Collection of bonus designs; the link is located at the very bottom of this post.

    1. I’m glad you’re excited, Tami! If you don’t mind digital versions, you can go on Amazon and purchase the Amazon Instant Video for each episode of the new season after it airs. Yay! I’m so excited that I won’t have to wait so darn long to watch!

Here’s the link for the Amazon Instant Videos:

  1. I’m excited to see where this one leads! Do have an email sign up so I am notified when each square gets released?

  2. About how often do you think you release the squares? Do you think this is something that I can do for a Christmas gift? Apologies if this is in the post and I missed it…I got excited and skimmed it.

  3. Thank you for this! I am so in! By the way , I watched the episode on YouTube on the BBC America YouTube page. I don’t have cable at all and was so happy it came out right away the next day. You can enjoy right along with us! Thanks again!

  4. Wonderful! Thank you so much for this.
You don’t have to wait for the DVDs to come out to watch the new season. Just buy it on Amazon and watch from your computer or Playstation.

  5. My husband is a big fan, he has all the Dr series starting from the first. Had then on vcr than sat down and transferred them all to disc.
So I will try and keep this quiet and do it for his birthday in December. The new series looks good, have seen the first one

  6. I’m wanting to make this as a surprise for my husband for Christmas but need to buy the yarn for the entire project at once (Bulk buy). Any chance there is a master list of yarns needed or will I need to wait 9 weeks until patterns for all squares are released?

  7. Love the squares! Can’t wait for the CAL! BTW you can go to BBC America online and watch the first episode for free. I don’t know if they will offer every episode, but I hope so!

  8. i am in the UK and am Dr Who mad, always have been, even have some old memorabilia 🙂 I won’t give anything away as I wouldn’t want to spoil it but I will say episode 1 was just amazing! A lot of things that a true fan will get and I gasped inwardly within the first few minutes! As for this cal, OMG!

  9. I can’t commit to doing the whole thing, but this looks great. Thank you very much for designing/organising this. I’ve been wanting to learn corner to corner and this will be the stimulus I need to actually do it!

    1. You can pick a favourite or two and make cushions… if you do mini C2C rather than regular they won’t be too huge. Chain 5 and HDC into the 4th/5th chains from the hook, then the standard block is Chain 2 and 2x HDC in the chain space. Just a thought 🙂

  10. I am so excited. I love K-9, he has always been one of favorites. I managed to find most of the colorways, so now to learn a new method and eagerly await the next block!

  11. thank you just finishing up another cal and saw this and i looooove dr who since the 80s and the ninth is my favorite regen ,plus who doesnt love k-9

  12. Can we at least get a heads up on the colors we’ll need, pretty please? That will cut down on my trips to Michael’s!

  13. Thank you so much for this! I’ve decided on a condensed version using only a few of the squares. My son will be so excited when it’s done.

  14. I am loving these squares!!!!! Have you thought about doing all the doctors? That would be fantastic!!!!

  15. What a wonderful project full of <3. Thanks so much for making it freely available. I had started graphing out the Tardis to make a scarf as a gift but the lucky recipient is probably getting a way better present now that I've seen this graphghan!

  16. This looks amazing so far and I’m really excited for the harry potter CAL. Sadly I’m going to have to make. Pretty sad that there’s no choice in the poll for Madame Vastra and Strax, think they’d make pretty cool squares.

  17. Will you be adding any particular boarder or recommend any particular color for joining etc? Would love to see your finished project!

    1. Yes I am! I am currently uploading a video on how I’m doing my borders. I’m basically doing two borders: the first one is worked in the background color of the square, and the second border (worked on top of the first one) is going to be in white, which I will use to join the squares. 🙂

  18. Do you have to do it c2c? I did the first square that way and hated it. Lol. It used so much yarn and I can’t afford to buy more. If I did it all in sc I assume the squares would turn out smaller? So how would I adjust for that?

    1. If you’re wanting to do it in sc c2c, try this for the first block and the following blocks: ch 4, sc in 2nd chain space from hook and in next ch space.

I also know a lot of people are doing it in the bobble stitches, but I’m not sure how much yarn that would take.

  19. I am wondering if you have to do it c2c. I did the first square that way and I hated the way it turned out. If I did sc instead how would I adjust the pattern?

  20. Thank you so much for doing and sharing this!! You have made my daughter-in-law, and myself, two very very happy people!! ^_^ You are the greatest!

  21. Thank you so much for doing this. My fiancé and best friend will love these…thank you for taking the time. Happy Hooking 😊

  22. Holy crochet hooks! I’m so glad I found this! I was reading up on the Harry Potter Crochet along and saw this. I am a Whovian to the core and super excited to start on this come summer time! I have two other blankets to finish up before this beast of a good time!

  23. Do you cut your colors every time you change? Or do you work with the colors at the same time? If you work with them at the same time do you have a video on how to do that? Otherwise there will be a million tails.

    1. I try to carry my yarn for as long as I can without it being too visible. My end project usually results in a lot of yarn tails, but not as many as there would be if I cut my yarn at every color change! Here’s my video on how I do my color changes–hope it helps!

  24. Quick Question, I’ve looked though everything (I think) but I can’t seem to find where you actually say how you chose to join all the squares. (I did see the link on the Dalek pattern where there are 12 different ways to join) I would love to know how you decided to join them 🙂 I’m very excited to share what I have come up with but I’m only working on 3 of 16 so it will be awhile before I can do that 😀

  25. Hi, I didn’t look through the other comments but I found an error on square 1 row 28. The last 1w should not be there. It should be 3b, 5w. Thanks!

  26. This is fantastic!
I don’t crochet much myself (every once in awhile I can manage to put something small together and that’s about it), but really love seeing things like this. The patterns are so nice and clear that it makes it easy to apply to other crafts. That’s actually how I found this blog post. I was looking for Doctor Who cross stitch patterns and stumbled over here after seeing a Whovian cross stitch on reddit put together from some of your block patterns a little while ago.

In case you haven’t seen it yet, I thought I’d bring it your attention.

  27. Is there a place where all the Vannas – RHSS equivalents are? Im wanting to use RHSS as much as I can, but the extra doctors (1-war) only have Vannas colors.

Im super excited to make this blanket! I cant wait to fight my husband over it ;D

    1. As of yet, I have not put together a full Vanna’s Choice/RHSS equivalency list. But I’ve definitely got one in the works! What color(s) are you trying to match? Maybe I can help!

      1. I am having trouble finding a match for Toffee, Rose, and Charcoal Gray.

I believe I have matched all the rest pretty good.

  28. I’m a little late to the party 🙂 But I’ve just finished square one….love <3. Quick question….I saw the link you left on how to join the squares, but I am wondering if you do a sc edge around each square before joining? I've left it as is for now, but I'm thinking the edge may help when it comes time to join them all up. Although, I've never made a blanket like this before, so I'm learning as I go!

  29. I am so jazzed to find this! We love Dr. Who, but my oldest son is a HUGE fan! I cannot decide on the number of squares. What you worked up seems to be on a queen size bed? Is there a way to work the squares smaller so I can use more of them? Thank you so much for posting this!

      1. Thank you so much for the response! I will check that out so I can get started!

  30. How do you design the squares? I would like to add a Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart one. He is one of my favorite Doctor Who characters.

  31. Hi
I’m trying to do K9 but when I get to row 21 I only have 1c at the end of the row instead of 2c. Any idea where I’m going wrong? I’ve counted so many times but I just can’t work out what I’m doing wrong.

    1. Hi Sarah,

There should be 2c at the end of row 21 for K-9’s square. It could be that you missed a block in a previous row (I’ve done that countless times!), or perhaps you carried another color in row 21 just one block too far.

I’d suggest starting by counting at the beginning of row 21 each color group and matching the count to the written instructions. If those all add up (besides the 2c at the end), try frogging row 21 and then count row 20. If you have 20 blocks, then the problem must be in row 21. If you DON’T have 20 blocks in row 20, then frog row 20 and count row 19.

Repeat this method until you find the row in which you skipped a block. Hopefully it’s close to row 21 so that you don’t have to frog too much. If you’re checking your rows as you go, you shouldn’t have to go back too far to find the mistake!

      I hope this helps! <3 <3
