Hey there, you clever crafters! I am so excited to finally share with you the pattern for my first “cardigan”: The Nerdy Cardi.
I have been working on this project for what seems like a year, and I am so pleased with the final results. This pattern has drummed up a lot of excitement over the last several weeks, so let me tell you more about it!
What is the Nerdy Cardi?
The Nerdy Cardi is a light-weight, open-work crochet cardigan is perfect for a nice summer day and works just as well with layers for spring and fall. You can even add fringe for some extra fun!
How difficult is this pattern?
That’s the best thing: it’s super easy! If you can work the chain, half-double crochet, and double crochet stitches, you can definitely make this pattern.
The photo says the Nerdy Cardi is made using filet crochet. What is that?
Filet crochet is a technique that uses double crochets and chain stitches to create “open” and “closed” blocks, which when graphed out can form a design. Scared? Don’t worry! I’ve taken the time to write out lots of filet crochet tips and pointers in the first several pages of the pattern. I have also made a video tutorial about the filet crochet stitch, which you can find here.
What sizes does this pattern come in?
This pattern currently comes in two sizes: an adult M/L size and an adult XL/1XL size. At the moment, the PDF pattern is written for both sizes. I hope to offer more sizes in the future!
How do I read the graphs for the Nerdy Cardi?
Good question! Follow along with the instructions in the PDF pattern. Start in the lower right-hand corner of the graphs. As you work each row of “blocks”, it helps to cross off each finished row before starting the next row.
Will there be more nerdy graph designs in the future?
The short answer is, YES! I currently have patterns for the Deathly Hallows and the Hufflepuff Badger in both sizes. Both patterns are posted below.
I have some graphs available in PDF format for the XL/1X size. I will post them as soon as I can convert them to the M/L size.
Other nerdy designs will be added as time goes on. Remember to check back here every now and then!
Now then…are you ready to get started? Then let’s do it!
- Approximately 7 skeins of Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton Yarn in Magenta (8 skeins if you want to add fringe to the bottom edge of your cardigan) – OR – approximately 1,302 yards of a worsted-weight yarn of your choice (more if you want to add fringe)
- The yardage above was measured for the XL/1X size. Use less size if you want to make the smaller size.
- Size G/4.00mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle (for weaving in ends) & scissors
- Blocking boards and pins (optional, but highly recommended!)
This pattern ranks as Easy+ on our Difficulty Ranking Chart.
Additional nerdy designs will be posted in PDF format below as they are uploaded. In the meantime, here’s some photos of the Nerdy Cardi!
