Stylecraft Special DK Yarn: A Review

Happy Tuesday, crafters! It’s been a while since we’ve had a proper Tuesday Tip blog post, but I think this one will be worth it.

As a crocheter in the United States, my local yarn choices can be somewhat limited. For years, I used what was available to me–mostly Vanna’s Choice or Red Heart yarns.

As the Two Hearts community has grown, many have asked for color comparisons from Vanna’s Choice yarns to other yarns, and I learned that many of our fellow crafters prefer to use Stylecraft Special DK yarn. Naturally, I had to give it a try.

When I decided to make the As-We-Go Stripey Blanket for my sister-in-law, I knew it was the perfect time to try this yarn that others have been raving about. So I went to Wool Warehouse’s website and ordered sixteen skeins total in Graphite, Silver, Parchment, Sage, and Storm Blue.

The price was perfect. For sixteen skeins, I only paid $33.26–and that included the shipping! Speaking of, it took less than two weeks for this yarn to ship all the way from the UK to eastern Washington state (and that included two weekends of non-shipping days). Not too shabby!

Now, I’m not used to working with a yarn of this weight. It’s lighter than my usual aran-weight yarn, obviously, because it’s a DK yarn.

But you know what? I LOVE it.

As soon as I arrived home last night, I saw a beautiful white package sitting on my doorstep. I rushed inside, tore open the package, and poured those sixteen beautiful skeins into my chair. (Not going to lie–I kind of wanted to roll around in all of that yarny goodness.)

It took maybe an hour or so for my tension to adjust to the difference in yarn weight. After that, I had no trouble working with this yarn.

In fact, it is probably the softest 100% acrylic yarn I have ever used. Well done, Stylecraft!

And the best part? Stylecraft Special DK yarn is available in 80+ beautiful colors. It was so difficult to choose which colors I wanted to use! But at this price, it’s so easy to order one of every color.

Still not convinced you want to use a DK yarn? There’s also a Stylecraft Special Aran yarn, and it comes in 30+ gorgeous colors.

I was planning on simply going to my local Michaels to purchase some Vanna’s Choice yarn needed for the Nintendo C2C Blanket I will be starting, but I think I will instead order more Stylecraft yarn. And while I wait for it to ship, I can use the Special DK I already have and continue working on this blanket for my sister-in-law. Yarn-win!
