Tuesday Tip: Keep your Crochet Confidence this Holiday Season

As a crafter, it’s easy to feel as though you’ve been reaching further than you can manage, especially during the holidays. We all have a to-do list that has fallen to the floor and has rolled underneath the coffee table.

Here are 5 ways to help keep your crafting confidence through this busy holiday season:

  1. Set the mood. When you’re ready to sit down and work on a holiday order, put on your slippers or grab a cozy cup of tea–whatever it is that makes you feel all warm and snuggly on the inside. Then pick up your hook and enjoy the snuggliness and the productivity!
  2. Keep a list of all of the items you need to make, and keep that list someplace handy. When you finish an item, cross it off. Don’t neglect this part. When your list is visibly getting shorter, you’ll feel just that more pro-active about getting things done.
  3. Don’t be afraid to say “no”. Somebody asks you to make a personalized afghan one week before Christmas? Say no. How about an entire set of Disney princess dolls? Say no. If you feel like you can’t handle that large of a job on such a short deadline, don’t be afraid to be honest with your customer.
  4. Don’t rush your product. If you hurry to meet a deadline, your craft will suffer. Be honest about the time required to make an item, and be upfront about that timeline with your customer. In the end, they’ll appreciate your honesty and the product will shine as an example of your best work.
  5. Remember that your product is a reflection of your love, caring and talent. You’re passing along more than just a pile of yarn: you’re sharing a bit of yourself with every item that you make. Be proud of your work! The customer wouldn’t be asking you to make that item if they knew how to do it. Show them how much you care–not just about their order, but about your craft.

It’s important to reach for things. Whether you’re setting small goals for yourself or dreaming of something big, having something just out of your grasp encourages you to do more. Be more.

Here’s the real Tuesday Tip for you:

Don’t stop reaching.

Keep dreaming of all the projects left to make. The list may be long, but there’s nothing better than making all of those items and crossing them off the list. You’ll learn which projects you enjoy and which you dread, and you’ll figure out what not to make in the future.

The best part about pushing your crafting self further than you had thought possible is that amazing things start to happen! One year ago, I never would have thought that I would be hosting giant CALs and design on-demand patterns, but here I am. My skill as a crocheter have drastically improved, but it’s my own confidence in my craft that has really skyrocketed.

As we start thinking about New Year’s resolutions, consider a commitment to continue reaching for that great beyond, that seemingly impossible dream. It will make your crafts better, and it will make you a better crafter.

Keep crafting,
